Talent call-ups in WWE have always been a topic of conversation among fans. Many superstars from NXT have ended up in limbo or even released shortly after arriving on the main roster, turning each call-up into a sort of lottery.
Furthermore, call-ups required the promoted talent to leave NXT's television programming to join the roster of their new brand, even if it meant interrupting any ongoing storyline they were involved in. However, something has changed in the past year regarding the management of these call-ups under Triple H's leadership. This was explained by Fightful in a recent report.
"WWE has done things a bit differently over the past year when it comes to promotions to the main roster, compared to some of the methods used previously. Under different mandates, WWE has managed these promotions in various ways, including simply removing the talent from NXT immediately upon the call-up. This was common in the Vince McMahon era, leaving NXT in a creatively challenging position. However, things are much more flexible now," the outlet wrote.
"In the past, there were specific moments when WWE knew they were going to make those call-ups. We've been told that the way they have been handled internally in the past year has changed significantly. Promotions to the main roster have been handled much more discreetly, and it is no longer mandatory for talent to leave NXT's television programming immediately to go to the main roster. The usual procedure now is for a wrestler to be called up and, due to the more flexible schedule of the main roster currently, they can usually continue to appear on NXT's programming," Fightful wrote.
"We've also been informed by a source at the Performance Center that WWE considers it important to have veteran wrestlers with television experience both at the Performance Center and on the show itself. That source indicated that some talents have been brought in without immediate plans for the main roster, and the company's intention was for them to complete a full stage in NXT," the report concluded.
Unlike WWE's previous stage, call-ups from NXT currently do not exclusively take place during the Drafts. In recent months, we have seen the rise of stars like Stephanie Vaquer, Giulia, or Roxanne Perez, who have competed in both NXT and the main roster before making the definitive leap to one of the two main brands.
