Artificial intelligence is already among us, and it affects the most unsuspected areas of our lives. As reported by Wrestling Observer on Friday, through its weekly newsletter, WWE has signed a contract with the Writer AI platform to integrate artificial intelligence into its creative process.
The company has recently hired Cyrus Kowsari as the new Senior Director of Creative Strategy, with the aim of leading the transition to a storytelling system assisted by AI. This tool has already started generating ideas and scripts, although initial tests have yielded controversial results, with stories internally described as 'absurdly bad'.
"Cyrus Kowsari was hired last month as the new Senior Director of Creative Strategy. He was previously a producer at Buzzfeed from 2016 to 2022, and worked for ONE, the MMA company, from 2022 until last month. He was introduced to the creative team by Paul Levesque," wrote Dave Meltzer. "When introducing him, Levesque explained that Kowsari will lead WWE's transition to AI-based storytelling and will integrate AI into creative services such as video and graphics. He added that this change is inevitable when it comes to creativity in professional wrestling."
Kowsari mentioned that he will be responsible for managing the narrative created by AI and for being a liaison with the White House, as Levesque is taking on more responsibilities related to politics in some way.
"So far, the AI software has generated what someone knowledgeable about the matter described as 'absurdly bad stories'. For example, it proposed a storyline in which Bobby Lashley (whom the AI still believed was under contract with WWE) returned as a wrestler obsessed with Japanese culture and history. The general feeling is that, once the errors are fixed, AI will begin to have a significant impact on the direction of the stories,"
"Another company had previously tested the use of AI for creative help and suggestions, and found that artificial intelligence was not able to understand professional wrestling or its stories," Meltzer added.
We will see if this tool can help WWE in the long run. Currently, the company is being heavily criticized for the quality of its weekly product, where Raw and SmackDown take up a large number of hours that need to be filled.
