John Cena closed more than twenty years of career by falling to Gunther at Saturday Night's Main Event, the event held last weekend at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The outcome, a surrender by Cena himself, provoked an immediate and visceral reaction from the audience: chants of "bullshit," insults directed at the Ring General, and a wave of boos that accompanied the final seconds of the match.
However, internally, the atmosphere was very different. According to Fightful Select, there was no widespread revolt behind the scenes, although the ending did not leave everyone satisfied. From the script and production area, they strongly defended the decision, while several superstars would have preferred Cena to bid farewell with a victory.
There were people on both sides regarding the end of Cena's last match, with most of the creative team in favor. We've heard from several talents who would have wanted Cena to be booked to win, but they understood the reality of Gunther and the future direction. There was no one really furious about the outcome.
The contrast between what was experienced in the arena and the internal feelings was evident. While part of the locker room understood the symbolism of elevating the Ring General, others would have wanted a more classic closure for a figure that defined two decades of WWE. But if something was clear, it is that the audience's reaction was one of the most intense in recent years.
During the match, chants of "Don't give up" were mixed with deafening boos towards Gunther. Mark Henry, who was present in the technical area, compared the emotion of the backstage with moments of irreparable farewells: "The last time I saw people cry like that was when someone passed away."
