Gunther has become public enemy number one for a large sector of WWE fans. The reason?: defeating John Cena in his retirement match and boasting about having made "The Greatest of All Time" surrender. That happened at WWE Saturday Night's Main Event, an event that took place at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
The hostility of the fans, furious with the outcome of the match, was such that the Austrian had to be escorted out of the venue. During a recent interview with TMZ, Gunther explained why he didn't want to hide or go incognito to avoid the public's anger.
At first, I wanted to enjoy it a bit. I mean, I could have hidden more or something like that, but it felt good to walk among people's anger.
The fans' fury carried over to the latest episode of WWE Raw, where Gunther made his first appearance after his victory over Cena. As expected, "The Ring General" was met with the loudest boos of his professional career. The audience's reaction was such that Gunther could barely string a couple of sentences together. However, his few words, and above all his attitude, were more than enough to continue provoking the fans.
"I was about to go out on Monday, and I was thinking: 'okay, what do I want to say today? What do I want to tell people and all that?' And as soon as I went out, I realized that there wasn't much that I could - or should - really tell them, because I was going to enjoy the damage that had already been done and how upset they were," he said.
The noisy segment ended with Gunther leaving the venue while receiving disapproval from all the fellow wrestlers he encountered along the way, including AJ Styles, with whom he had a tense confrontation in the parking lot. Considering that "The Phenomenal One" announced that his career will end in 2026, many are already speculating on who will be the next legend to be retired by the Austrian.
