John Cena ended his career as a professional wrestler in the latest edition of Saturday Night's Main Event. His controversial defeat against Gunther marked the final episode of a farewell tour that extended throughout 2025. Twelve months in which "The Greatest of All Time" left moments to remember, but also others that were heavily criticized.
With the arrival of 2026, Cena shared a tweet reflecting on his last year as a wrestler. The seventeen-time world champion wanted to thank everyone who participated in some way in his retirement tour (fans, teammates, journalists, and viewers), as they all contributed to making 2025 a year he will never forget.
Life goes on and we all move forward. Now that 2026 is here, I will fondly remember so many moments from 2025. Thanks to ALL the fans, coworkers, critics, and anyone in the world who used their voice to make 2025 a year never to forget. I gave it my all. I thank everyone
John Cena's retirement tour began and ended controversially. In January, Cena came close to victory in the Royal Rumble, but was ultimately eliminated by Jey Uso, who has been one of the most criticized wrestlers of the year despite his strong connection with the fans. In December, John was defeated again, this time by submission to Gunther in his final match. A creatively controversial decision heavily criticized by a large sector of fans.
In between, there are several historical records, such as winning his seventeenth world championship or capturing the Intercontinental Championship, the last belt he had yet to add to his list of achievements, allowing him to join the WWE Grand Slam Champions club. Now, Cena can fully dedicate himself to his acting career with the promise of never competing again.
