Countdown to WWE Backlash 2026

Michael Cole, Corey Graves, Big E, and Peter Rosenberg welcome us to the first hour of the Countdown Show.

Michael Cole interviewed Seth Rollins ahead of Backlash. "The Visionary" recalled his match against Gunther at WrestleMania 42, describing it as one of the most physical matches of his entire career, especially after returning from injury. However, despite the loss, he believed it was a great experience. Cole reminded him that just over a year ago, on the Raw after WrestleMania 41, he founded The Vision. Why did he do it? Seth replied that it was due to insecurity, as he had created too many enemies throughout his career. Rollins didn’t trust Roman Reigns or CM Punk, so he decided to proclaim himself the leader of the company. To achieve that, he aligned himself with Bron Breakker, whom he saw as the perfect talent to pass the torch to when the time came. Cole asked him how he felt when Bron decided to exile him from The Vision. "I felt disappointment and sadness, and a lot of guilt for letting my fans down, for letting the company down," Seth responded. Despite everything, he understood why Breakker did it, but that didn’t stop him from thinking his former ally had taken something from him. "This month I turn 40 years old, and I don’t have many opportunities left," Seth said. Thus ended the first part of the interview.

Jacob Fatu cuts a brief backstage promo. "The Samoan Werewolf" insists that he doesn’t want Roman Reigns’ World Championship. He NEEDS it. "Tonight, Backlash will find out that Jacob Fatu is all gas and no brakes. FA-TU!" he exclaims to end his promo.

Cathy Kelley interviews Sami Zayn backstage. The Canadian points out that Trick Williams has created an environment where disrespecting him seems acceptable. Even the fans have started looking at him differently. Sami is tired of the situation. That’s why tonight he won’t just beat Williams, he’ll humiliate and disrespect him. Additionally, he hasn’t forgotten what Lil Yachty did to him. Zayn promises that tonight he will leave the event as a three-time United States Champion and finally put his story with Williams behind him.

Cathy Kelley interviews The Miz and Kit Wilson backstage. Kelley asks whether they have any idea who Danhausen’s partner might be tonight, or whether his cloning machine will actually work. Wilson believes people like Danhausen need to look in the mirror to see how toxic they are. The Miz, meanwhile, makes it clear that he is not cursed (even showing off a shirt with the slogan "Hello, I’m not Cursed!"). The Miz lists the problems Danhausen has caused him, including costing him a championship victory and stealing his daughter’s bicycle. The Miz promises that tonight they will put an end to the problem Danhausen represents for WWE once and for all.

Byron Saxton interviews Danhausen in another backstage area. Danhausen assures him that his cloning experiments are progressing well. Saxton asks if he specifically knows who his tag team partner will be tonight. "No," Danhausen replies after thinking for a moment. Danhausen approaches Byron and wraps an arm around his shoulders. "If you ask me that question again, you will be cursed," he says. Visibly worried, Saxton thanks him for his time to end the interview.

We see the second part of Michael Cole’s interview with Seth Rollins. He spoke about the breakup of The Shield, recalling that he has explained many times why he ended the faction. And he believes time proved him right. Cole compared that moment to what happened a decade later when Bron Breakker expelled him from The Vision. Rollins stated that Bron learned a lot from him, as seen at WrestleMania 42, where it cost him his match against Gunther. Seth still believes Breakker has enormous potential, but he’ll have to learn that every decision has consequences. Rollins recalled the number of people who mentored him back in the day—great minds like Triple H, Kane, Randy Orton, and Stephanie McMahon. Bron, meanwhile, has Paul Heyman. The difference between the people who helped him and "The Wiseman" is that Heyman always acts in his own interest. And that’s bad news for a young guy who still hasn’t found his place. Seth believes defeating Bron at Backlash would allow him to regain the confidence Breakker took from him at WrestleMania. "If I can beat him, I’ll gain the clarity I need to move forward, to try to reclaim the title I never lost," he said. On the other hand, if he loses, he would get the kick in the ass he needs to become the person and talent he needs to be. "To get back to where I want to be," he said to conclude the interview.

Joe Tessitore interviewed Trick Williams before the show. Tessitore reminded him that he won his first championship in his first WrestleMania appearance. How does he handle the pressure? "I was built for this," Trick replied. He recalled his football tryout in South Carolina, where he outperformed 199 other candidates. That process helped him become the superstar he is today, but it does not define him. "I don’t need anybody’s approval. It doesn’t matter. Trick Williams is Trick Williams," he said. Regarding Lil Yachty, he stated that he is his friend and one of his biggest fans. Tessitore also asked him about the recent shift in fan reactions, with many fans turning against Sami Zayn to support him instead. "Sami made my job easier. Hating is never a good look," he said. Speaking about what happened with the "Gingerbread Man," Trick bragged about being a very intelligent guy. Intelligent enough to provoke a veteran like Sami. Williams noted that all he has to do is be himself to retain the United States Championship at Backlash. "I beat Sami Zayn on the biggest stage of them all. In my first WrestleMania appearance, I showed him exactly who I was. And I’ve got no problem doing it again, and again, and again," Trick said to end the interview.

Sonya Bryson-Kirksey sings The Star-Spangled Banner to close the Countdown Show.

John Cena makes his entrance. "The Greatest of All Time" heads to the ring to a huge ovation. John enjoys the reception before joking with the fans, admitting that the best part about his current status as a retired wrestler is that he can finally relax knowing nobody will come out to attack him. Cena admits he has been thinking a lot since his last match. What’s next for him? "One More Match!" chant the fans. John thanks them for those words while acknowledging that he has thought extensively about his final bout. He knows many people were disappointed. However, Cena was satisfied with the outcome because he accomplished his goal, which was to create opportunities for new talent.

The event that marked the end of his career also served as a platform for stars like Sol Ruca, Je'Von Evans, and Oba Femi to introduce themselves to the world. "Oooooooooba, Oooooooooba!" chant the fans. John hopes the Nigerian is watching because that sound is pure energy. Cena recalls how, just four months after that event, Femi was defeating Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania. It was at that exact moment that he realized they needed to recreate that experience. And that is why he is here tonight.

"We’re going to make history tonight. We have a brand-new event. The debut of a new championship in WWE," he says. "And it won’t be just any championship. It will be an event and a championship that carries my name. That’s why I will work hard to ensure it represents a certain level of excellence, and I’ll do everything in my power to make that happen." Cena continues by explaining that, for the first time in history, the voice of the audience will matter more than ever, because the fans themselves will vote to determine the champion of the John Cena’s Classic. This could create a scenario where a superstar who hasn’t won a single match during the event still ends up being crowned champion. Wins don’t matter. What truly matters is earning the respect and admiration of the fans.

John promises to do everything possible to provide fans with a unique experience—one that can continue year after year. With that said, he personally wants to thank superstars like Oba Femi, who worked so hard during the December event and inspired him with this crazy idea. John also thanks WWE for making it a reality. Finally, he thanks the city of Tampa, which is very special to him, for all the "noise." With that, "The Greatest of All Time" says it is time for the main event of the evening. Cena drops the microphone onto the mat to end the segment.
