Blood always adds a touch of drama, and even epicness, in a professional wrestling match. However, not all companies handle this issue in the same way. For years, we have seen how WWE tried by all means not to show blood on screen. Something that does not happen in All Elite Wrestling, where it has become a recurring element.
However, there are those who would like blood to be a special resource, used only on special occasions. This is the case of Thekla, current AEW Women's World Champion, who in an interview for Westwood One Sports made it clear that she has not intentionally bled in the company by her own decision.
"One hundred percent. One hundred percent. The first time I bled in a match and I could... the first thing is that you simply smell it, you know? You smell it, and in a strange way that unlocks something, something so animal and monstrous. I could feel how my pupils dilated, as if someone had injected me with some incredible shit. It's like a survival instinct and the hunt begins. It's weird. It's like a higher level of excitement. It's like: 'Yeah, let's go. Let's tear it all apart'," she said.
"Look, I think you have to be careful with that because it's very powerful. It can create a lot of drama and really enhance something. But when you see it all the damn time, it loses its magic, you know? So, if you've noticed what I've been doing, I have been involved in matches with blood since I've been in AEW, but I haven't bled. I'm saving myself".
"Besides, I'm the champion. I'm the damn boss, right? I don't need anyone to come and bust my head open. That moment has not come yet. But, overall, I also like blood. Although I don't need to see it every week. I mean, I'm a woman, I have to see that shit quite often anyway, you know?".
Thekla was part of the first female Blood And Guts in the history of All Elite Wrestling, where she joined forces with her Triangle of Madness teammates (Skye Blue and Julia Hart), Mercedes Moné, Megan Bayne, and Marina Shafir to defeat the team of Willow Nightingale, Kris Statlander, "Timeless" Toni Storm, Jamie Hayter, and Mina Shirakawa. The match was very well received by fans for its brutality, with Blue being one of the competitors who ended up bathed in blood.
