John Cena had a special appearance at WWE Backlash to announce the creation of a special event that will bear his name. The show will follow the tone set by the Saturday Night's Main Event show from last December, with exhibition matches pitting NXT talents against main roster superstars. Participants will be eligible for a popular vote to decide the tournament champion, regardless of whether they win or lose their matches.

The John Cena Classic was presented as an original idea from the seventeen-time world champion, which is why he will actively participate in its development until it reaches its final form. "The Greatest of All Time" was so excited about it during a recent interview for Adam's Apple.

"Oh my god, I'm super excited. It's incredible. It's something I've been thinking about for a long time and, again, we're still working on the details, and I like that. I like that it's a project in development, but this is totally my idea," he said.

"I like to turn off the radar and see what people are capable of. I like to see the potential when the spotlight comes on, and maybe that's the core of the John Cena Classic. That's how I started," he added.

Netflix interest and possible event date

Although details about the event are still unknown, there are already those who have shown interest in it. This is the case of Netflix, who could exclusively air the show. Additionally, it could be broadcast in December, coinciding with Cena's retirement date. This was explained in the most recent report from Wrestlevotes Radio on Fightful Select.

"After speaking with several sources following the announcement of the John Cena Classic, neither the date nor the location seemed to have been finalized. One of the sources Wrestlevotes spoke with noted that an early December date would make sense from a logistical standpoint, considering the WWE calendar and the first anniversary of John Cena's last match," the outlet wrote.

"A source also stated that Netflix showed almost immediate interest in broadcasting the event on their platform, although this has not yet been finalized. At this time, very few details of the concept are confirmed," the report concluded.

Netflix has been the television home of Monday Night Raw since January 2025. Internationally, it is also the platform that livestreams all WWE weekly shows, including the PLE. Only Saturday Night's Main Event shows and crossovers with AAA have been left out of the platform.
