While the match between Roman Reigns and CM Punk closed WWE's grand event with a flourish, WrestleMania 42 was generally perceived as an event with ups and downs for the company, due to a promotion that many considered overly focused on celebrities, rumors of low ticket sales, and a first night that many deemed disappointing. For some, the issues with WrestleMania 42 began when WWE was forced, or decided, to deviate from some of the original plans for its main event.
On Tuesday morning, on "Wrestling Observer Radio," Bryan Alvarez conducted a thorough analysis of the issues surrounding WrestleMania 42, including WWE's creative changes for the event, which, according to him, were caused by injuries, indecision, and the usual changes in plans. However, he pointed out that this was only part of the problem, and that the loss of momentum, ticket sales issues, and the fact that the event was held in Las Vegas two years in a row also contributed.
"Obviously, part of the problem with Las Vegas was holding the event there two years in a row," Alvarez stated. "But that wasn't the main reason, there were many issues. One is that WWE is not at its best moment anymore, that's the main one. Secondly, they had, and partly it's not their fault, but they had the WrestleMania card prepared well in advance, and there were things like Bron Breaker defeating CM Punk in a match for the Heavyweight World Title and becoming champion. They had all sorts of things prepared."
"And then you know, Bron Breaker got injured and Bronson Reed was scheduled to take his place, but he also got injured. Originally they were going to have another match between Roman and Cody. And they eventually refused, thinking something like: 'People have already seen that match too many times.' So then they were going to have a new match between Cody and Drew, but they thought the same thing and ultimately decided to have Cody face Randy Orton."
