Since his arrival at WWE, Gunther has been singled out as one of the great talents destined to lead the company during this generation. The company's confidence in the Austrian wrestler was evident when he was tasked with ending the careers of three big names in professional wrestling: Goldberg, AJ Styles, and John Cena. However, in recent months, his presence in WWE's creative plans seems to have lost prominence.
This situation has not gone unnoticed among fans, who do not quite understand the direction the company has taken with Gunther. This perception is also shared by Ilja Dragunov, who was asked about this issue during his recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show.
"I think my opinion is the same as many other people's. If you are the one who retires John Cena, that puts you in a position that you should maintain at a certain level. For me, he is one of the best wrestlers in history and will continue to be one of the greatest of all time. He has been a good friend of mine since 2014 or 2015. I know what he is capable of and I know he will always do a good job. Everything he does will be incredible. However, after setting the bar so high and the image that has been projected of him, it feels like the level we are currently working at is not up to par," he stated.
Gunther and Dragunov are two old acquaintances from the European independent scene. Both wrestlers reunited in the now-defunct NXT UK, where they had one of the best rivalries in the brand's history. However, they never faced each other in a televised match on WWE's main roster. Dragunov recently left the company to sign with AEW. His in-ring debut will take place later tonight.
