In recent weeks, one of the biggest talking points within the wrestling community has been the creative handling of AJ Styles. Everyone knows that The Phenomenal One is nearing the end of his career, and his loss to Dominik Mysterio last week angered many fans.
In this context, AJ Styles delivered a controversial promo last night during a commercial break on the latest episode of Monday Night Raw. While international audiences were able to see it during the Netflix break, U.S. viewers only saw advertisements during that time. The former WWE World Champion claimed to be completely alone since The OC members were split from him, finding himself in a vulnerable position. However, the most striking comment he made was claiming that there are very important people within the company who don’t want to see him succeed, and that they’ve orchestrated his recent failures.
On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer shared some insight into what he believes could be AJ’s next steps. Meltzer stated that everything happening around Styles right now is no coincidence. This strange on-air promo adds to a symbolic image Styles posted on social media—showing an hourglass with the silhouette of his personal logo—and the fact that his contract with the company is set to expire in February of next year.
At the moment, no one can say with certainty what’s really going on with Styles. Although his retirement seems to be approaching (he previously stated he wouldn’t wrestle into his 50s, and he’s currently 48), Meltzer reflected on the curious decision to air the promo only during the commercial break:
“If it had aired on the U.S. show, everyone would say, ‘It’s just part of a storyline.’ But because it aired during a commercial, now people are wondering, ‘Wait… was that unscripted?’”
The reality is that AJ Styles’ current situation remains a mystery. While logic would suggest that his promo is part of a larger creative angle, we also can’t rule out the possibility that Styles is genuinely frustrated with how poorly he’s being handled on television.
