At the premium event No Mercy, held last weekend, Jacy Jayne retained the Women's Championship after defeating Lola Vice, but not without controversy. The match was decided when a masked person attacked Vice, sparking one of the most talked-about mysteries of the event.
However, the surprise didn't last long. In the official coverage published by WWE.com, the company mistakenly revealed that the culprit was Lainey Reid. The initial text read: "Jacy Jayne retained the NXT Women's Championship thanks to the shocking help of Laney Reid."
After realizing the slip-up, WWE edited the note and changed it to a more neutral version: "Jacy Jayne remains the NXT Women's Champion, although not without some controversy." Nevertheless, fans had already captured the spoiler and spread it on social media.
Originally, Reid was supposed to compete in No Mercy against Sol Ruca for the WWE Speed Women's Championship, but it was announced that an injury had forced her out of the match. During the show, she even appeared wearing an orthopedic boot, and was confronted by Vice herself.
In recent weeks, Reid has been trying to earn the trust of Jayne and Fallon Henley, and with Fatal Influence recently losing Jazmyn Nyx due to her departure from the company, all signs point to Reid aiming to fill that gap in the faction.
